City Hall leaders are taking more action against MagnaGro International after city inspectors found people violating a condemnation order at the eastern Lawrence business.

Assistant City Manager Diane Stoddard confirmed that city inspectors on Wednesday found three people inside the shuttered manufacturing plant at 600 E. 22nd St.

The city in July declared the plant unfit for human occupancy because it is not connected to the city’s water and sewer service.

Stoddard said it wasn’t clear whether the three people in the building were MagnaGro employees or whether manufacturing work was going on inside the building.

Stoddard said the case will be referred to the city prosecutor, and all three individuals and the business’ owner could face charges of violating the city’s condemnation order.

MagnaGro was the site of a double-fatality industrial accident in April, and has suffered several chemical spills.

Ray Sawyer, owner of MagnaGro, said he wasn’t sure who was in the building Wednesday, but that he is making arrangements to move the business out of the building. He declined to comment on whether the business would restart operations elsewhere.
