40 years ago: Missing band camp attendee found

Record-breaking amounts of water had been pumped from the Lawrence water treatment plant during the month of July. A new record of 288,697,000 gallons were treated during the area drought. The average amount pumped was more than 9 million gallons per day. Recent rainfall was judged too widely scattered to have made a significant impact on the dry conditions. Meanwhile, thousands were fleeing several coastal communities in Texas and Louisiana as Hurricane Celia approached, packing 115 mph winds and 10-foot tides.

The band camp attendee who had been reported missing (see OHT for July 31, 1970) was reported to be found and in “fairly good” condition after she fell from a car on a gravel road near Lone Star Lake. The driver reported that the back door was not securely closed, and it had flown open when he had gone around a curve, causing the young woman and another passenger to fall out.

Entertainment at local movie theaters included “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “Chisum,” “Two Mules for Sister Sara,” and the original “Airport” movie.
