40 years ago: Explosive device damages real estate offices

The relative quiet that the city had been enjoying for a few days was shattered when an explosive device caused “sizable but not catastrophic” damage to the McGrew Real Estate and Insurance Co. at Ninth and Indiana.

The first 10 months of operation for the Douglas County Legal Aid Society were deemed a success, as 328 persons had received some form of help from the office in that time. Kansas University senior law students were able to work in certain types of cases under the supervision of a practicing attorney.

A 16-year-old girl who had been previously reported missing from the Midwestern Music and Art Camp at KU was still missing. She was believed to be in the Lawrence area, probably staying with acquaintances in a rural area.

The seven houses, two garages and one barn still remaining on the block just east of the courthouse were scheduled to be sold at auction on August 26. The block had been condemned the previous fall and was to be the site of a new city-county law enforcement and judicial building.
