Free State softball splits twinbill

? Courtney Parker went 5-for-6 with six RBI and the Free State High softball team split a pair of games against Shawnee Mission West on Thursday.

The Firebirds lost the first game, 6-4, then recovered to win, 11-6, in Game 2.

Parker, a freshman, leads the Firebirds in RBIs, hits and batting average this season.

“She’s been as consistent as anyone in the lineup,” Free State coach Lee Ice said. “She’s competed every at-bat and makes contact.”

In Game 2, Free State had solid showings from A’Liyah Rogers and Alex Hill, who both went 3-for-5 and scored three runs.

“We started swinging the bats better the second game,” Ice said. “We just didn’t show up to play early.”

Mary Ann Smith earned the victory in Game 2, while Megan Smith closed the door with her first save of the season.

Free State (5-11) will face undefeated Olathe Northwest (16-0) on Tuesday at home.
