O-North spoils no-hit bid

? Free State High’s softball team came one out away from a no-hitter and a sweep of a doubleheader with Olathe North on Tuesday at CBAC.

Instead, the Firebirds had to settle for a split.

After using timely hits and strong defense to beat O-North, 5-1, in Game One, FSHS suffered a 2-1 setback in Game Two.

“The highlight was, the kids competed,” Free State coach Lee Ice said. “They didn’t find a way to lose. (O-North) just strung together three hits late. I don’t know if that’s unlucky or what.”

Up 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap, the Firebirds coaxed two outs before the Eagles won it with a flare single, a double and a single up the middle to spoil the combined no-hit bid by Mary Anne Smith and Megan Smith.

There was no such drama in the opener.

Free State (4-10) led 1-0 after one and 3-0 after three to make a winner of Megan Smith.

Lauren Fox was 2-for-4 and batted in two runs, Samantha O’Brien was 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs, and Courtney Parker was 3-for-4 with a double.

FSHS will travel Thursday to SM West.
