Swimming firm creates charging issue
A shake-up in the Lawrence swimming world has city commissioners considering a new relationship with a for-profit company.
Ad Astra Area Aquatics — a for-profit group that has split off from the longtime nonprofit Lawrence Aquahawks swim club — is seeking a lease to use the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center for training.
Commissioners will consider the issue at their 6:35 p.m. meeting tonight. Commissioners had expressed some concern about leasing the facility to a for-profit entity.
Staff members are recommending that the city move forward with the arrangement, but charge the for-profit swim club about twice the hourly rate it charges nonprofits.
The new use is not expected to create any shortage of swim space for the general public, Parks and Recreation Department leaders said.
