Another delay granted in 2006 murder case

A Douglas County judge has granted another delay in a 2006 murder case.

Despite objections from Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson, Judge Robert Fairchild granted a request Monday for Durrell Jones’ attorney to withdraw from the case.

Jones is facing a first-degree murder charge in the October 2006 shooting death of Lawrence hip-hop artist Anthony Vital.

Jones appeared Monday in Douglas County District Court, where his attorney, Scott White, asked to withdraw because he is closing his law practice.

Branson objected because of the age of the case, saying any further delay could prejudice the defendant and the state.

Jones’ previous attorney withdrew from the case last year when she moved out of state. A new trial setting has been scheduled for May 4. Jones has not yet been appointed a new attorney.
