Worst of times

To the editor:

Why in the world would we want to revisit the year of 1970? What useful purpose did it serve to dredge up one of the worst times in our history?

Are you seeking to teach us our history? Or perhaps news about today’s problems is not sensational enough?

With the myriad problems we have today living in a city which has the highest average price for real estate in Kansas and the lowest-paying jobs, why do we stay? Because the general quality of life is difficult to match.

We have advanced far in the last 40 years in terms of race relations and, yes, there is still a long way to go, but could you have imagined electing an African-American to the highest office in the land in 1970?

Today, every parent can look at their child and imagine that they could achieve any position in our society if they have the intestinal fortitude and the willingness to work as hard as it takes to achieve their dreams.

In 1970, we were a WASP society, and we have moved very far forward from that time. In my opinion, reviewing 1970 serves no purpose except to rouse the rabbles that are on the fringes of society and plant ideas for disruptive violence. Let’s move constructively forward and know that we are not condemned to repeat that tragic era of our past.
