The Eudora High School chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 24 new members on April 16.
To be eligible for membership consideration, students must earn a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 through at least three semesters of high school. After qualifying for membership, potential members must meet high standards of leadership, service and character.
Sophomores selected for NHS this year are Katelyn Abel, Michael-Shayne Baxter, Bria Carder, Madeline Dickerson, Auston Katzfey, Matthew Kelso, Ryan Leary, Brock Miller and Whitney Weld.
Juniors selected are Leslie Brown, Emily Gomez, Dylan Litherland, Sean Moran, Jordan Plaice, Kayla Potter, Nora Vandruff and Kayla Walters.
Seniors selected are Tyler Beebe, Jamie Johnson, Hannah Kouri, Madison Oller, Cheyenne Stephens, Kalen Wright and D.J. Zahn.
Members of the Perry-Lecompton High School Marching Band performed March 15 at Walt Disney’s Main Street, U.S.A. The band traveled from Perry to the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida to take part in a Disney Performing Arts Program.
Dance groups, choirs, ensembles and marching bands from around the world apply to perform each year as part of Disney Performing Arts at both the Disneyland and the Walt Disney World resorts. Once selected, they are given the opportunity to perform at the resort for an international audience of theme park guests.
Mark Jongman-Sereno, Lawrence, received the High Scholarship Award in the College of Design at Iowa State University in Ames. The award is given to undergraduate students who rank in the top 2 percent of their college class.
A card shower is being planned for Hazel Stewart, of Lawrence, who will turn 80 on Sunday. Friends and family may send cards to Stewart at 1621 E. Glenn Drive, Lawrence, KS 66044.
Kelley Liebst, Lawrence, will earn a bachelor’s degree in physics and astronomy from Kansas University in May and has been accepted into the astrophysics Ph.D. program at Arizona State University in Tempe.
Liebst, a 2005 graduate of Free State High School, is the daughter of Roger and Anne Liebst of Lawrence.
Cassie Brickell, Lawrence, a member of AmeriCorps’ National Community Civilian Corps (NCCC), began work March 15 at Garden Place Academy in Denver. This is her third of four projects during her 10-month term of service. Brickell and her team of 12 corps members will work with third-graders at the academy through early May. Brickell has been working with AmeriCorps NCCC since mid-October 2009. After a month of training, she traveled to New Orleans to work on reconstruction projects. She then relocated to Johnson City, Texas, to work on historical restoration at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park for two months. Her term of service will end July 27.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln undergraduate students were honored in conjunction with UNL’s All-University Honors Convocation April 18 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Students are recognized at the convocation for their cumulative academic achievements.
Area students named as “high scholars,” students other than chancellor’s scholars and superior scholars who are in the top 10 percent of their class, were Monica Sorensen of Bonner Springs and Jennifer Lippert of Lawrence. Sorensen, a freshman, is a business administration major; and Lippert, a senior, is an education and human sciences major.
