FSHS baseball tops SME, 6-3

? Colin Toalson went 2-for-4 with a home run and the Free State High baseball team held off Shawnee Mission East, 6-3, on Monday at the Johnson County 3&2 Fields.

Toalson also earned the victory on the mound, entering the game in relief of JD Prochaska in the third inning. The junior improved to 3-0 on the season.

Toalson’s home run to left center field clanked off the scoreboard. Even more impressive, it occurred when he was down in the count with no balls to two strikes.

“He certainly has a lively bat,” Free State coach Mike Hill said. “He’s making strides offensively. He’s going to be a very fine hitter. He is now. We also feel very good with him on the mound.”

The Firebirds improved to 9-2.

Senior Cory Delg went 1-for-2 with a double, a sacrifice fly and three RBIs.

Defensively, Free State committed three errors, dished out five walks and hit three SM East batters.

“To allow 11 guys to get on base in that fashion is typically not synonymous with winning, but limiting them to four hits certainly was the key,” Hill said.

The Firebirds will play host to Shawnee Mission South at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
