Jayhawk cheer

To the editor:

Thanks very much for the article on Jayhawks in Afghanistan (Journal-World, April 9). Our daughter-in-law, Maj. Nicole Dobson, a medical doctor in the U.S. Army, served last year as director of the intensive care unit at Bagram Airbase Hospital. She sent out the call for Jayhawks, and we passed it to friends who sent lots of paraphernalia. Dale Seuferling and KU Endowment sent more, and he asked the athletics department for the signed collectibles. By the time everything got there, Nicole was back home safely, and two KU grads had succeeded her.

Later we received this note from Lt. Col. Todd Rasmussen, M.D, U.S. Air Force: “Thank you for sending the Kansas paraphernalia to the surgical hospital. I am Darrin Clouse’s replacement and like him a Kansas graduate (Pharmacy/ Pre-med 1989). The items arrived just in time for the conclusion of the Big 12 basketball season. So while the football items were off cycle, the timing was perfect for KU’s success in Big 12 basketball! We have distributed the items appropriately and they’ve done wonders to raise many people’s spirits. I’ve especially enjoyed placing a few Jayhawk pins and stickers around my colleagues from Austin, TX. Rock Chalk, Jayhawk!”

Every member of the KU community can take pride in what our alumni have done as soldiers and doctors and also what our players, coaches, administrators, faculty and fans did to send a little cheer their way.
