Kansas State University announces area students earning honors for their academic performance for the fall 2009 semester. Semester honors are awarded to students who earned a 3.75 grade-point average or higher. Graduation honors are awarded to students with a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.95 for summa cum laude; 3.85 to 3.949 for magna cum laude; and 3.75 to 3.848 for cum laude.

Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, announces area students named to the dean’s list for the fall 2009 semester. “Highest honors” are granted to students with 4.0 averages; “high honors” are awarded to students with 3.8 to 3.9 averages.

Joanna Loewen and Yuri Mitchell, both of Lawrence, received highest honors; and Stephanie Gass, De Soto, and Emily Edwards, Lawrence, received high honors.

The University of Saint Mary, Leavenworth, announces area students named to the fall 2009 dean’s list, by earning a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

Fort Hays State University announces area students who completed degrees in the fall 2009 semester and those named to the dean’s honor roll, by earning a minimum grade-point average of 3.6.

Several area students accepted Fort Hays State University scholarships for the 2010-2011 academic year at a Student Recognition Program Feb. 14 at the Doubletree Hotel in Overland Park. The program recognized students from 11 northeast Kansas counties.

Sam Cooper of Baldwin High School accepted a $1,200 Miller Black and Gold Academic Award and a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in political science. He is the son of Will and Carol Cooper, Baldwin City.

Haley Carpenter of Lawrence High School accepted a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in art and an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award. She is the daughter of Tim Carpenter and Jill Hummels, Lawrence.

Michael Dunlap of Ottawa High School accepted a $2,000 Presidential Award, a $1,200 Miller Black and Gold Award and a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in physics. Dunlap was also the winner of the $400 SRP scholarship drawing. He is the son of Brett and Danielle Dunlap, Ottawa.

Zachary Kaighin of Tonganoxie High School accepted a $500 Copper Academic Award. He is the son of Jeff Kaighin and Janice Kaighin, both Tonganoxie.

Kansas University honored student athletes named to the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll for the spring and fall 2009 semesters during halftime of the KU-Baylor University men’s basketball game Jan. 20 at Allen Fieldhouse.

Student athletes with a grade-point average of at least 3.0 were eligible for the honor.

Central Junior High School’s Sam Beaulieu and Eddie Wilson earned the 15th place team trophy in the K-9 under 1250 section of the National Junior High Chess Championships held April 9-11 in Minneapolis. Beaulieu also collected the eighth-place individual trophy, while Wilson and Southwest Junior High School’s Venkata Malladi received trophies for tying for 15th place. West Junior High School’s Joseph Miller earned the ninth-place trophy in the K-8 under 750 section.

Chris and Crystal Bergkamp, Bonner Springs, announce the birth of their twin daughters, Paige Michelle Bergkamp and Victoria Faith Bergkamp, on March 26, 2010, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park.

Paige and Victoria have a sister, Abygail Lynn, 3.

A number of Lawrence chess players are among the all-state players recently designated by the Kansas Scholastic Chess Association. All-state status honors the top 20 players in each division based on their performance at the KSCA State Chess Tournament and their top three performances at other eligible tournaments.

The department of history at Creighton University, Omaha, Neb., held its Annual Honors Banquet on Tuesday. Twenty students were recognized with the following awards: the Grennan Award, Robbie Award, Schleich Award, Lieben Award, Lindell D. Hill Award, Kneer Award, and the Horning Endowed Scholarship.

Sophomore Ken Homan of Lawrence received the Grennan Award and a copy of “Traitor’s Heart” by Rian Malan.

The Grennan Award, presented annually, is given by the department of history to honor outstanding performances in a core section of non-Western history. The award is either a book engraved with the winner’s name, a cash award or a certificate.

Joanna Loewen of Lawrence, a senior at Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, was one of 14 elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Cornell’s Delta of Iowa Chapter held its induction ceremony today.

Mallory Sansom of Eudora has been accepted for admission at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn., beginning in the 2010 academic year. Sansom is a student at Baldwin High School.
