Unlight the night

To the editor:

I was stopped recently by a Journal-World reporter and asked if I did anything to reduce my carbon footprint. I told him I use cloth grocery bags and recycle paper. But what I really wanted to say is that we should turn off our streetlights at night.

Most people are asleep at night, and yet every street has a bright light shining away at each intersection and every third house has some more outside lights burning brightly that next to nobody sees. Some people might need some lights on at night, but it seems wasteful to have all those lights on all night.
