A downtown parade on Saturday will kick off the city’s celebration of Earth Day.

Kansas University Environs will host a parade at 11 a.m. on Saturday on Massachusetts Street from Seventh Street to South Park.

A celebration featuring live music, food vendors and children’s games will start after the parade at South Park. The event, sponsored by the city’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Division will include exhibits on alternative fuels, energy conservation, land preservation and other topics.

Lawrence Parks and Recreation leaders also will offer garden and tree identification tours during the event. Admission to all of the events is free of charge.

In addition, the city’s public transit system will offer free rides all day on Saturday as part of the city’s Earth Day celebration.

Is the parade going to include fuel using vehicles? If so, isn't that counter productive against the whole point of Earth Day. I would be happy to see a parade of only "man powered" entries.

Only if you let us do it in your yard, Gary.

Earth Day...will the Earth Nazis be goose stepping behind a bio diesel powered school bus with one passenger while blowing an air horn sound pollution device like a couple of years ago? Sounds like a typical Lawrence freak show. Please keep your kids at home so these modern day brownshirts can't brainwash them anymore than our public school system.

Again, the idiots on this blog are running rampant. Any event that encourages environmental awareness is a good idea. Congrats to the Waste Reduction and Recycling Division for your time and effort to sponsor this celebration.

All you brainwashed rightwingers who are real sure your god is going to magically lift you to heaven soon are in for a big surprise when all your pollution causes problems for your children and grandchildren. They aren't going to be very happy with the world you leave them.
Also, I remember something in the bible about giving man dominion over god's creation. You don't think your god is going to be more than a little pissed with what you have done? Maybe you won't be magically lifted up to heaven after all.

Y’all posting in a troll thread!

This really goes along with the phrase "you have to spend money to make money". So what if you have to burn some gas for a parade, it's the bigger picture that you should be looking at. True, a man powered parade would be a good idea and would really help prove a point, and maybe that's in the works, but for now let's just be content with the message that is being sent.

I'm looking forward to taking my family to the celebration. Here's hoping for clear skies...

Wow, consumer1, sounds like you have a lot of unresolved issues! I don't see why people have a problem with a free, volunteer-based parade that helps promote environmental awareness and support the members of our community in working towards a cleaner, safer, healthier planet. Apparently you all don't care about the most basic necessities of life (ie: clean air and water) and would rather patronize those that are trying to make a difference. So sorry for caring about the world I live in, and the world I will leave to my children.
