A slap on the wrist

April 6, 2010

To the editor:

Let me get this straight. If you are drunk and you run over someone and kill them, you may have to spend up to 60 days in the county jail. Whoa! My body was starting to go into convulsions. Sweat was streaming down my face. My hands are shaking so much I can barely type this.

The Douglas County district attorney is really throwing his weight around, and all of us better take notice!

I didn’t realize that the worth of a life in Lawrence could be valued as much as someone’s inconvenience. I think that the city of Lawrence should be up in arms with this slap on the wrist that the D.A. is enforcing. The people should be outraged and demand his head.

The district attorney did not write the relevant statutes or sentencing guidelines. If you are so angry about this injustice, petition your legislature to change the existing laws regarding vehicular manslaughter or, at the very least, direct your anger towards the correct individuals --the person who committed this crime. The judge who sentenced him and the DA can only work within the confines of the present law.

No kidding, Dena. A judge does not decide the law, but holds those accountable who broke it by sentencing them to appropriated punishment. Lovely how some do not think beyond messenger.

You're right Oak and Dena. However, Oak, I disagree with the idea that getting drunk and running someone down is just an "accident." It's more than that.

We need more harsh laws on drivers. We should take up the California laws like you cannot use a electronic device AT ALL while driving.

A person is responsible for driving and safety. There is untold studies with hundreds of reports that prove that using a cell phone, texting, drinking (of course), and other activities while driving hampers reaction time.

if someone kills someone because of alchole, SHould be like 5 years minimum in jail, no perole. Also, we need to set u jails like they got in Italy. A TINY little cell and the go out for exercise and the go back in. NO baseball teams, no nothing.
