Lenexa ? Albert Minnis struck out nine batters in five innings, but the Lawrence High baseball team fell, 9-1, on Thursday to Shawnee Mission Northwest.

The Lions actually led, 1-0, after three innings, but couldn’t hold the lead.

“We had a lot of non-competitive pitches at the tail end of the game that ultimately cost us,” LHS coach Brad Stoll said.

The Lions dropped to 1-3. Minnis took the loss for LHS.

“He was really good early, his slider was good and he was really blowing the doors off of them,” Stoll said of Minnis. “Then in the fourth, little things that went wrong went wrong.”

Among those things were an infield single, a bloop single and a squeeze play by Shawnee Mission Northwest.

LHS senior shortstop and leadoff hitter Landon Moseley went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and an RBI double, while junior centerfielder Ross Johnson, who hits in the No. 9 spot, went 2-for-2 with a stolen base.

“We did some OK things offensively,” Stoll said. “You never like to lose, but sometimes when you lose — and lose in the manner we did — you learn a lot about your team. Our coaching staff is sitting on a lot of information that we can build on.”

Lawrence High will travel to face Olathe North on Tuesday.
