Lew Perkins issues statement on Tuesday incident

September 23, 2009

Kansas University athletic director Lew Perkins commented on the incident between members of the KU football and basketball teams Tuesday night in a statement released Wednesday morning.

“We are aware of an incident that occurred last evening that involved members of the football and men’s basketball teams. I am disappointed that some of our student-athletes put themselves in this position, and it’s something that I am taking very seriously.

“I continue to gather facts about this incident, and I plan to address this issue personally with both teams. I also know that Bill Self and Mark Mangino are working together to address it, and I am confident that they will handle the situation appropriately with their teams.

“We will handle any discipline regarding this incident internally, and we will have no further comment about it.”

Also on Wednesday morning, KU basketball coach Bill Self confirmed a previous Journal-World report that Taylor would miss three to four weeks to ESPN's Dana O'Neil.

Just gotta laugh at these things...

Um, hey football team: we're trying to get behind you and support, but please keep in mind - this is a basketball town. You've got about 20 more years of high-level performance and winning seasons to be considered equal.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Whatever. Considering that there have been other incidents since then, it's time to send some kids packing. If they want to live in the 'hood, let them, but don't let them bring the 'hood here.

Will there be a Statement, Part Deux for this mornings dustup?

“We will handle any discipline regarding this incident internally, and we will have no further comment about it.”

Read here: "We're not actually going to do anything, because these kids are cash cows for Kansas Athletics Incorporated, and we're not going to risk the money over something like discipline."

Pretty much got it Gareth. Money talks, ~ull~~it walks.

no doubt this crap has to stop...

(and I believe it is likely all but over now)

the headline should read: "Biggest Deal Made Over Next To Nothing In A Long Time"

All over a girl??? Come on guys, there are plenty of girls for everyone. No need to fight over this one.

ralphralph 8 years, 7 months ago

Handle it "internally"? Sounds like there was a crime of violence. Any lawmen in these here parts?

Competitive emotional young men sometimes act in competitive emotional ways.

Those involved now have to face their teammates. When their teammates, whom they love and respect, tell them how disappointed they are in this behavior that will hurt much more than any external discipline handed out from on high.

That's also what is most likely to keep something like this from recurring.

It should be handled internally. You want to be a fan? Be a fan and let those who know and are responsible for these young men deal with it.

why is lew issuing a statement instead of jim marchiony?

Danimal 8 years, 7 months ago

Yeah, if two people get into a fight on public property with enough intensity that one goes to the hospital shouldn't law enforcement do at least a cursory investigation? Have we finally reached the point where those with enough money and privilege don't even have to go through the motions of obeying the law anymore?

Danimal 8 years, 7 months ago

autie, that's completely awesome. Mangino and Self should make all their players get together for uncomfortably long hugs.

Christine Anderson 8 years, 7 months ago

Danimal, that's funny! Perkins, you make me sick. Handle it internally? No further comment? Really. Neither of these teams would be anything without the fans, who pay money for tickets, t-shirts, etc, etc. Therefore, it sure as Hades is the public's business how it's handled! Perkins is enabling the jerkwads who were involved in these brawls. As a previous poster said, the translation is not a damn thing will be done about it!!

The University of Kansas, which gave parking lots street names so they could cite traffic infractions, needs to investigate this criminal behavior of assault and battery, then prosecute it to the fullest extent of the law.

Gareth Skarka 8 years, 7 months ago

cheeseburger: You're naive if you think that.

This was a fight, bad enough that one participant had to go to the hospital -- if it was anybody other than the Football and Basketball teams, there would be an LPD investigation, and assault charges filed.

But KU Athletics Incorporated runs this town. It will get "handled" -- which means nothing will be done, because to handle it according to the law would be a threat to their profits.

If this situation doesn't make you sick, you're not paying attention.

stuckinthemiddle 8 years, 7 months ago

first of all... as it happened on campus, if there was going to be an investigation it would be done by the KU Public Safety Office... (KUPD)

secondly... the injury that sent the participant to the hospital was a dislocated thumb... rather minor and something a lot of guys wouldn't even bother seeking medical attention for... but Taylor being a scholorshiped athlete he didn't have much choice...

and... I'd guess that scuffles like this happen pretty often on campus between non-athletes and we don't hear about them because nobody cares....

and... the idea that "KU Athletics Incorporated runs this town" is just plain stupid... actually more stupid than Taylor's comments on facebook...

I'll tell you what is at least a little bit sickening is that there are people who are so ready and willing to destroy the lives of young people for making pretty common mistakes...

Luckily… the people who will make decisions about all this are better informed, more experienced and qualified to deal with it than those of us out here blabbing about it…

I was taught to treat persons with a certain amount of "automatic" respect based upon their position, their age or one's accomplishments etc. It takes a lifetime to earn true respect however. These "boys" have lost my respect, I am sure that it won't matter to KU one way or another. Shame on these people for abusing their position. No class at all! I hope Mr. Perkins will set these kids straight. I hope that they loose the "gangsta" tude also!

massada 8 years, 7 months ago

That's how snyder, in snyderville, handles everything - "in house". Which means - you never hear another thing about it. The majority of these athletes are not at any college for educational purposes - and their strong lack of intelligence precedes them. Definitely lacking some class (as in behavior) here.

"This was a fight, bad enough that one participant had to go to the hospital"

He only had to go to the hospital because he doesn't know how to throw a punch. He essentially hurt himself.

How has that link to the crying baby photo?

Give them a scholarship? Then also give them lessons on decorum (ie. how to conduct oneself in public because, heretofore, they will be in the public eye). I presume that to some degree this is already being done...but, obviously, not very well.

These kids are just College is a learning ground. For many things. These kids are no different...except that they must be plastered front page in a dink college town like Lawrence when they do something wrong.

I'm not making excuses for their behavior. It's just as unappealing to me as a parent and a taxpayer as it is to those whining about it. But you really don't need to look too far to figure this one out, do you?

How incredibly sad is it that the UDK (Un-Undoubtedly Krap) has better coverage, more pictures, and more information than the LJ World. Perhaps the Urinal could benefit from hiring on some of these Journalism students, they must be as good or better than the current reporting staff. They Definitely got the scoop on this one and the jump on the Urinal World.

ClaroAtaxia 8 years, 7 months ago

This article also offers no explanation on what actually happened. Does the author enjoy wasting people's time with an article that goes nowhere and explains nothing? It's like the author didn't ask questions! LJ-World, WTF?!

Young men drink too much and fight over a girl. That has never happened before in human history! Wait! There's Romeo, Hatfields/McCoys, King Arthur/Lancelot/and G girl. . .
