Free State Brewing Co. and Bowersock Mills & Power Co. are winners of the first Business of the Year awards from the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.

Company leaders will receive their awards during a luncheon Oct. 1 at SpringHill Suites by Marriott, Sixth and New Hampshire streets.

The awards program honors “the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit of our business community’s leaders,” the chamber said in announcing the winners Tuesday. Companies were judged on their commitment to community, unique business practices and local business expansion efforts.

Free State won among companies with more than 25 employees. Bowersock won among small companies.
