Rezoning requested for homeless shelter plan

A proposal to move the Lawrence Community Shelter to eastern Lawrence is still on track to receive a hearing by the end of the year.

Lawrence city commissioners at their meeting Tuesday unanimously agreed to initiate a rezoning and special use permit request that would allow the homeless shelter to locate on the site of the former Don’s Steak House.

Tuesday’s action means the proposal can now be heard by the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission in November. City commissioners then could take up the issue in December.

The shelter wants to build a larger facility to replace its current shelter that is located at 10th and Kentucky streets.
