A Douglas County judge has reduced the amount that owners of a former Lawrence club must pay the city in a lawsuit that essentially forced the club to close, attorneys for both sides said Tuesday.

Club Axis, 821 Iowa, was ordered in September to pay the city $11,500 in legal fees. On Tuesday, District Judge Michael Malone reduced the amount to $1,500.

The club turned in its liquor license, closed its doors and has been put up for sale, after repeatedly being ordered by Malone to quit operating illegally.

After connecting multiple incidents of violence to the establishment, the city raised the issue in court that the nightclub was operating without an approved number of parking spaces, as required by city code.

Club owners are appealing the case, but said they have no intention of reopening the hip-hop establishment.

Wow almost everyone on here is celebrating the fact that a lot of hard working honest people lost their credit history and main source of income because they made the mistake of investing in this town. And then almost everyone complains that they are allowed to keep $10,000 of it!! Sounds like a typical Bolshevik to me. I hated Axis, but that's besides the point. And don' t worry, the bank that owns the mortgage on the Axis building will find a way to take that extra $10,000 away, and then blow it so it can qualifiy for more taxpayer bailout money.

Just be glad no one was shot at Quality Inn in a crossfire. They did prevent from someone getting killed. Where is the city going to follow the young black community this time? Which club are they going to shut down next?

I would guess the reason for the reduction in legal fees was due to the $11,500 being completely inflated (BS) the same way KU's legal fees were against Joe Collage.

I have been trying to tell you this reason for the last 5 years (5 years = to the amount of time the neighbors have been awaiting trial)

are you still not getting it ?

Sorry Camry but the demand for one star "fine" dining is not what it use to be. If you think you could afford a 1 1/2 million dollar building to be use as a low income restaurant then be my guess and buy it, the current owner would be very grateful. In the end I'm sure Doug Compton will buy it at the foreclosure auction, he already owns the rest of that corner block.
