School board to ponder shifting ninth-graders

The Lawrence school board will hear an update at its meeting Monday on what effect moving ninth-graders to the high school would have on space.

One of the board’s goals for the year is to review whether to reconfigure schools.

The most common configuration in Kansas includes elementary schools serving kindergartners through fifth-graders; middle schools serving sixth- through eighth-graders; and high schools serving ninth- through 12-graders.

The report that board members will discuss will center on overall high school building capacity, how certain areas are used for specialized spaces and how overall enrollment would be affected.

Also on Monday, board members are scheduled to complete purchase of about 76 acres southeast of Lawrence for about $1.7 million and approve raises and fringe benefits for staff totaling about $835,000.

The board’s meeting begins at 7 p.m. Monday at the Educational Support and Distribution Center, 110 McDonald Drive.
