U.N. hope

October 21, 2009

To the editor:

United Nations Day, Oct. 24, and United Nations Week, which follows, should be celebrated by all peace-loving persons. The blue and white United Nations flag should be flown. Social studies classes should inform students about the important international role of the United Nations in promoting peace and solving world problems.

When President Barack Obama recently addressed the United Nations General Assembly, he spoke to delegates from almost 200 sovereign states — the town meeting of the world. In regard to the United Nations, Winston Churchill aptly pointed out that jaw-jaw is better than war-war.

The UN is an abysmal failure. It was flawed in its conception and has become more flawed over time. It has become a place where dictators, tyrants, and totalitarians dominate. While its objective was noble, its construction was based on a false premise and it is more flawed now than before. I see no reason to "honor" the UN. I would prefer to see the US and all other freedom loving peoples withdraw from the UN and let the rotting house collapse.

If you can ignore the all past human-rights abuses of UN peacekeepers, go ahead and wave that flag.
