Lawrence resident Caitlin Ballard’s bid to become the face of the United Way for 2010 appears to have fallen one vote short.
Voting in the online contest ended Friday night, and Ballard was one vote behind the leader, Ruthie Rusie, a 90-year-old teacher from central Indiana.
The unofficial results posted on the United Way’s Web site, liveunited.tv, have Ballard receiving 2,438 votes, one behind Rusie. Ballard had pulled into second place Friday afternoon, and voting ended later that day.
The official results will be announced on the Web site Monday.
Ballard, an Americorps VISTA for the United Way of Greater Topeka and Kansas University graduate, was one of five finalists in the LIVE UNITED Story Search. She has been working with the Youth Volunteer Corps to establish youth volunteer programs, and she is working to start a chapter at Highland Park High School in Topeka.
