City commission meeting agenda

KDOT offer to support dam’s repair to be considered

Bottom Line

Lawrence city commissioners will consider in the consent agenda taking up the Kansas Department of Transportation on its plans to contribute up to $100,000 toward repairing the Bowersock Dam. An agreement to formalize the plan is up for approval Tuesday night.

In exchange, KDOT would receive information about the “geologic profile” of the pier foundations that support the bridges crossing the Kansas River, just upriver from the dam.

Background

In August, the city agreed to spend up to $2.45 million on upcoming repairs to the dam. The decision follows a warning from federal regulators about the dam’s condition.

The dam is owned by Bowersock Mills & Power Co., which uses the river to generate electricity at its plant. The city is responsible for maintenance of the dam, which keeps the river level high enough to provide water for the Kaw Water Treatment Plant.
