City shut out at state tennis tourney

— Lawrence high schoolers had a rough day at the Class 6A state tennis tournament Friday at Maize South.

Players from Lawrence High and Free State High went a combined 0-3 in singles and 0-3 in doubles.

Free State’s Kelly Phipps fell to Shawnee Mission East’s Lysie Smith, 6-1, 6-1, and Mackenzie Lown lost to Blue Valley North’s Madison Rhyner, 6-2, 6-3. Lawrence High’s Morgan Manger lost to Blue Valley’s Ashley Tiefel, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, the LHS duo of Taylor Eubanks and Jamie Jarrett fell to BV West’s Jenny Gerhardt and Sara Curran, 6-1, 4-6, 10-5, and Jordan Payne-Elizabeth Simons tumbled to SM East’s Grace Martin and Elizabeth Wilcox, 6-0, 6-3. Free State’s Ashleigh Stagg and Liz Walters lost to Maize’s Anna Friesen and Kari Rezac.
