Residents visit Harpers Ferry

Several Lawrence residents will be in West Virginia this week to attend the 150th anniversary of John Brown’s 1859 raid at Harpers Ferry, Va.

Kerry Altenbernd and Carrie and Brad Mayhew and their children will be attending the anniversary, which runs through Saturday at the Harpers Ferry National Historic Park in what is now West Virginia.

Altenbernd is representing the Black Jack Trust, a group that manages the Black Jack Battlefield and Nature Park in southern Douglas County. He will present a traveling exhibit, funded by the Kansas Humanities Council, depicting Brown’s activities at the Battle of Black Jack.

The Mayhews, who have performed in more than 75 churches, 10 states and three countries, will perform gospel songs at the festival.
