Newton ? The Free State gymnastics team took first place on Saturday at the Newton Invitational.

The Firebirds, scoring 101.825 points, just edged host Newton, which scored 101.175 points.

Kelcy Bowers and Drue Davis led Free State. Bowers placed second in all-around scoring with 34.4 points, just ahead of teammate Davis, who scored 34.375 points and finished third.

Lawrence High finished in fifth place. Caitlin Haig paced the Lions, finishing 17th in the all-around.
