New sister city

Lawrence soon will have a third sister city.

Commissioners agreed at their Tuesday evening meeting that Iniades, Greece, should join Eutin, Germany, and Hiratsuka, Japan, as official sister cities.

Commissioners approved the recommendation from the city’s Sister Cities Advisory Board on a 4-1 vote. Commissioner Mike Amyx voted against the request because he had concerns about adding a sister city at a time when the economy is struggling.

But members of the advisory board promised commissioners that they would not seek any additional funding to add Iniades to the Sister Cities Program in the near future. The group has built up about a $6,000 reserve fund that will fund the expansion for several years. The Sister Cities Program receives about $7,500 a year in city funding. The group has pledged not to seek increases in its city funding for at least three years.

A delegation from Iniades is expected to be in Lawrence on Oct. 19 through Oct. 22.
