Douglas County Sheriff’s Department still seeking suspect in Saturday’s chase

Douglas County sheriff’s deputies have not been able to locate a man who on Saturday wrecked a car, ran from officers and was later seen getting into a car traveling down Interstate 70, Undersheriff Steve Hornberger said Monday.

The crash occurred about 12:15 p.m., while officers were investigating a report of a suspicious car traveling down the highway. The suspect was being pursued by officers when he wouldn’t stop and then crashed the car into a tree in the 100 block of Highway 40, near the Shawnee-Douglas County Line, Hornberger said.

Armed with rifles, deputies searched for the suspect. Lawrence police assisted with the search and the Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter was called in to help, Hornberger said.

The undersheriff said the helicopter had been patrolling for NASCAR events at the Kansas Speedway, and was available to assist quickly.

Officers did not find the suspect, who was later seen getting into a vehicle traveling down the Kansas Turnpike near mile marker 193. Hornberger said a vehicle description wasn’t available.
