Douglas County sheriff's deputies have not been able to locate a man who on Saturday wrecked a car, ran from officers and was later seen getting into a car traveling down Interstate 70, Undersheriff Steve Hornberger said Monday.

The crash occurred about 12:15 p.m., while officers were investigating a report of a suspicious car traveling down the highway. The suspect was being pursued by officers when he wouldn’t stop and then crashed the car into a tree in the 100 block of Highway 40, near the Shawnee-Douglas County Line, Hornberger said.

Armed with rifles, deputies searched for the suspect. Lawrence police assisted with the search and the Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter was called in to help, Hornberger said.

The undersheriff said the helicopter had been patrolling for NASCAR events at the Kansas Speedway, and was available to assist quickly.

Officers did not find the suspect, who was later seen getting into a vehicle traveling down the Kansas Turnpike near mile marker 193. Hornberger said a vehicle description wasn’t available.

Blinded by your own bias, michael?

How about an explanation for the sake of education of the public about hot pursuit?

Michael~ For what it's worth, in the previous article about this, one poster (MYOB) said that the cops held his/her son and friends at gunpoint in their field before realizing that the suspect was not among them.

If you didn't read that article and all the comments, you would not have heard about this, but that's undoubtedly what Smitty was talking about. Smitty refers to them as "children," but MYOB didn't specify how old they were. I assumed that they were probably teens, but "son" and "kids" isn't clear.

Here's a link to the original article: http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2009/oct...

Smitty, where do you get information about the cops pulling guns on children? I didn't see anything about that in the article. What are you smoking nowadays anyway?

I thought they already arrested Brady Morningstar?

OK....still wonder what all this simulated hot pursuit justification for trespassing in the fields with guns pulled down on children from the air and ground??

I don't believe AK47's are issued to LEO's as a tactical weapon. Those in the pictures looked more M-16 like..or whatever the latest version of that is. Now I'm sure we're all just curious as hell as to what was so suspicious and why they are pursuing this with such great zeal.

I still say this is first rule. They had him down, had his pants..and he escaped. The reason we still hear nothing...

first rule. What else brings out helicopters and weapons like that?

take a look at the photos... http://www2.ljworld.com/photos/galler...

....no hot pursuit going on here folks....so bring out the ak47s and the heli...never mind the dogs..we don't really know where he went anyway except for that annoying report he got into a vehicle(not pink car or rusty van or extended cab truck).....just curious, was it an officer that saw him get into a "vehicle" and can confirm it was the suspicious driver?...if it was, you aren't playing nicely with the information....

Officers did not find the suspect, who was later seen getting into a "vehicle" traveling down the Kansas Turnpike near mile marker 193.....uuhhhh...east or west bound?.......

....but they did find some farm kids in a corn field working that they drew guns on from the ground and the heli....not one of them met the descrliption of fat black man in green sweat shirt ...but then that info is no longer part of the help us search for the susicious black man....but then neither is a description of the "vehicle" on the turnpike going either east or weat, who knows?

Suspicious vehicle......suspicious, why?.....a fat black man?

These stories do little to inform us it appears. Now if anyone says why do I need to be informed, I didn't decide that...le and the news outlet made that decision...now there are so many unanswered questions...why ak47s for instance? OH, that photo isn't included in the above link any longer....

....what police state were you referring to lawrenceguy?

Can we just let this story go? They'll never catch him. Good for him.

He either had a friend pick him up or we have a car and driver missing. Anybody know of a missing person.

Good luck to him! Everyday it seems we take one step closer to living in a police state.
