Turbocharged shopping spree

Toni Martin, Lawrence, right, runs through the Sixth Street Hy-Vee store, leading NASCAR driver Clint Bowyer, driving the grocery cart, center, on a two-minute, 33-second shopping spree Thursday. Hy-Vee and General Mills matched the ,000 in merchandise collected by Martin and Bowyer and donated 00 each to ECKAN Just Food and LINK.

Clint Bowyer knows all about navigating tight turns on the track.

But instead of a stock car, the NASCAR driver from Emporia was steering a shopping cart on Thursday at Hy-Vee, 3000 W. Sixth St.

Bowyer helped Lawrence Realtor Toni Martin collect $1,000 worth of food in two minutes and 33 seconds as part of a food sweepstakes contest. Martin entered the contest at her 3-year-old daughter Michaela’s urging, and won.

She guided Bowyer quickly through the aisles as they grabbed boxes of food and cleaning supplies for her family.

“She’s the best one so far. She was the fastest one,” Bowyer said. “She was organized. She had a crew. Everyone was organized and laid out what they were supposed to do. Everybody had a task, including me.

“It was just trying to keep up with her and load the shopping carts as fast as I could.”

Hy-Vee and General Mills will also match the shopping spree and donate $500 each to the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen and ECKAN Just Food, store director Marty Streit said.

“That means a lot,” said Martin, an agent with Realty Executives. “When we do charity work in the Lawrence area, a lot of it stays in Lawrence, and that’s what we strive for to make a better community.”

Bowyer is in the area to compete in this weekend’s Price Chopper 400 at the Kansas Speedway.
