Toys for Tots sets up county collection points

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program soon will play host to several events to collect toys for needy children.

“Stuff the Truck” is scheduled for early December at Walmart, 3300 Iowa. A 24-foot-long truck will be in the parking lot, and organizers want enough donated toys to fill it. The truck will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 5 and noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 6. Several Marines will be on hand, and there might be a special appearance by Santa Claus.

Lawrence Board of Realtors will accept toys at any open house or Realtors’ office starting that weekend as well. The Realtors will, however, collect toys throughout December for the Toys for Tots program.

On Dec. 6, Googols of Learning will be host to a play day from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 500 Rockledge Road. It’s essentially a “children-giving-to-children toy drive,” said Mary Jones, Toys for Tots coordinator in Douglas County. New, unwrapped toys will be accepted, and kids can enjoy free playtime and snacks.

The final event — “Noise for Toys” — is a benefit concert at The Bottleneck, 737 N.H. Five local bands will play Dec. 12, with the $5 cover charge going to the cause. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., with music at 8:15 p.m.

There are also 75 collection boxes around Lawrence where donors can drop off new, unwrapped toys. Visit toysfortots.org to find Douglas County locations. There are also “Keep the Change” jars at local restaurants, where every penny will count toward buying toys for needy children in the area.
