To the editor:
Perhaps the city of Lawrence should be green enough to provide two “pedestrian/cyclist safe pathways."
Create safe pathways on two of the most dangerous streets for both pedestrians and cyclists, aka Tennessee and Kentucky streets. The right of way is available, aka existing sidewalks, and there is a ton of bike and pedestrian traffic in these areas at all hours.
Widen sidewalks on the east side of each street to accommodate both cyclists and pedestrians.
Light them up.
Provide crosswalk signs and markings at each intersection from Seventh to 19th to increase awareness of drivers.
Decrease the speed limit by 5 mph from Seventh to 19th.
In the process the city is making it safer for women, which equals rape prevention.
Name these pathways after Rachel.
The investment is small compared to the safety that could be provided. KU students are worth the investment considering the number of jobs they generate and tax revenue they generate. Students bring life and culture to Lawrence, Kansas.

Perhaps Heckler should have a bake sale to pay for his dream project. Or he could take his talent downtown and perform for tips. Heckler has all these grandiose ideas, but he always wants someone else to pay for them.

Safe passage for cyclists and pedestrians seems practical. Students are substantial asset to this community.
Considering Heckler is a taxpayer he is offering his portion of the 1994 sales tax that is dedicated to recreation and healthy exercise. This money has paid for safe pathways in other parts of Lawrence,Kansas so why not do an inner urban pathway for a neighborhood that generates tons of revenue and sales taxes for Lawrence,Kansas.
Students are the primary source of local sales thus sales taxes for Lawrence,Kansas. Without 30,000 students where would Lawrence be on the map? The greater portion of the population would not choose to be here were it not for our college students.
My guess is 30,000 students alone generate enough sales taxes to construct and maintain this path. Let's show them some respect.
In fact all of them should register and vote in all our local elections. Students are substantial asset to this community.

There you go merrill, defending Heckler. Please enlighten us as to exactly how you know what Heckler is offering? Just how much was "his" share in 1994? Do you think there is much left from the 1994 loot?

The 1994 sales tax never died. It is quite active and has brought some good things to Lawrence. I heard Heckler at a LAN meeting agreeing with David Corliss that projects such as this would be good use of existing tax dollar sources.

aroundtown - I'm impressed that you signed up just to tell me that :> (you also just violated the rules!)
I guess I have to put smiley faces on my sarcastic posts.

I think Heckler's ideas have merit, however it may be more realistic financially to do as he suggests on only one of the two streets (I would decrease the speed limit on both). Since the streets are only a block apart, the widened sidewalk/bike path on one street could be used by pedestrians/cyclists going both north and south, which provides substantially the same impact on safety at half the cost.

Hmmm, I thought Richard Heckler was Merrill (aka Richard Hecklerbot, that I've heard of on ethis forum many times.)

GardenMomma,
The schizo natures of his posts are nice aren't they? Unfortunately, your post will probably git dissappeareded like this one, everyone knows who merrill is. You only need to compare language. Just like Sven...

Oh, yep. You're probably right. Whoops! I certainly didn't mean to make a faux pas. Sorry about that.

A bike and walking path going North and South from 6th to 19th sounds like a good idea to me. Better than building a roundabout that's for sure.

Oh Richard or Merrill, whatever you want to be called today, please come up with the money for all of your needs. If you would start wasting time with cut and pastes and actually do some work, you might actually get somewhere. Blaming past presidents will not work either. Try coming up with some real change.
