Reesing discusses Mangino investigation

Senior quarterback Todd Reesing provided more information about the investigation that is underway of KU football coach Mark Mangino.

The Kansas Athletic Department is conducting an investigation of football coach Mark Mangino and the Journal-World has confirmed the investigation began after Arist Wright complained that Mangino poked him in the chest in the days before KU took on Colorado.

In his weekly press conference, which was a brief 11 minutes, Mangino faced more than a dozen questions relating to news that broke this morning on KUsports.com that Athletic Director Lew Perkins held a meeting with members of the football team regarding concerns with Mangino.

Mangino opened up his press conference by saying he wouldn't comment on the matter, but ended up providing more information as questions persisted.

"I haven't lost the team one bit. I may have lost some people around here, but it's not players," Mangino said. "Take that for what it's worth, you decipher it."

Mangino confirmed he had a 10-15 minute meeting with Perkins after the athletic director met with players. He was not at the meeting with Perkins and the players.

"If you want to know what was said, I'm not disclosing it. He's the one who's disclosing information about it, I'm not," Mangino said.

KU senior quarterback Todd Reesing said the meeting was between Perkins only and the players.

"Lew said an unbiased person, who will have no opinions either way, will conduct the investigation," he said. "I think Lew's doing what he has to do in the position he's in."

Reesing added that he didn't think this had anything to do with the current record, but said he didn't want to talk about what the investigation was about.

When asked whether this would be a distraction with a game against No. 3 Texas coming up this weekend, Mangino said it wouldn't, but added he was taking this matter very seriously.

"We're really focused on Texas. You lose a few games and those things surface," he said. "We're thinking let's do everything in our power as coaches and players to get a win."

Reesing said, though, that there was no turmoil within the team, but that they'd have to work hard to remain focused.

"I told the guys not to talk about it," Reesing said. "We're going to have to find a way to stay focused on Texas."

So does this mean big time money supporters are unhappy?
That's what I take it to mean.

I am pretty sure it means the athletic department. Probably the donors too.

I say hire Ron Prince! He's done more for KU recruiting then Mangino, and he already has 3 wins for KU

Well, Gale Sayers can't be happy about adding a multimillion dollar luxury box tower the stadium with this news circulating. Only a win against Texas (a well-deserved BCS buster we owe them for that 2005 phantom pass interference call on our Senior Day in Lawrence) will help him now. It will be hard to push support for a luxury tower when you are 5-6 staring down Mizzou in the finale. Three straight bowl wins would stregthen the case . . . as would have the Big 12 North title we would suppose to have.

By the way, where is our complaint to the Big 12 about officiating this season? The KUAC doesn't keep these stats, but did you know that KU is 0-9 in the Mangino era when Cooper Castleberry is the Referee in Big 12 games? Figures, that Texas punk! This is plain worse than the Ed Hightower curse from 1990-2007 in NCAA tournament games. Hell, he nearly took that Memphis game away from us in 2008! Thank goodness for Super Mario!

Other news sources are saying it's about an altercation between Mangino and a player, and also how he treats the players in general. I guess there is also a committee of parents to players who are bringing forth complaints. Just check You Tube.. there is one video of him cursing out a player and it's pretty well known he has a hot temper. Check the KC Star, they always have better info :) (no offense LJW)

also, lew and mark have a WELL known dislike for each other (trust me), so i'm sure this is what he's talking about as far as "lost people."

None of the players like Mangino. It is a fact. They are trying to get rid of him.

Mangino is one of the highest paid college football coaches so I heard on ESPN.

Money and glass house stadiums do not always cause a winning team. Contrary to popular thinking among big donors. Isn't is strange what some do once they become wealthy?

Of course coaches can make enough in two or three years to set themselves up for life.

Anyone who says Lew Perkins isn't doing a good job as AD doesn't have a freaking clue what they're talking about.

Word is that Perkins wants to hire a Connecticut coach buddy of his---the timing of this doesn't get past all of us. I wouldn't be suprised if the AD came out with this mess to distract Magino and hopefully keep him from winning any more games---that would make it easier to fire him and hire someone from Connecticut. Let's see what happens.

  18. BlackVelvet (anonymous) says…

Mangino got his precious practice field, and now seldom uses it because of the way it's built. Someone might spy on his team! what a spoiled rotten slug!

  19. consumer1 (anonymous) says…

Devil, OU is 6-4. Far from being one of the "greatest programs in the country". If Stoops leaves, who else would you go after? Charlie Weiss? Yeah, right. Not sure if you remember, but Mangino did win a national championship w/ OU as their O - coordinator. That might be part of why they would consider him for the coaching job. Hasn't done too bad at KU either with the talent he has, other than Meier and Reesing.

  25. nobody1793 (anonymous) says…

  26. javelin (anonymous) says…

Lew Perkins is a great man. The students, student-athletes and employees of the athletic department all love him. He is honest, hard-working and smart. We are lucky to have Lew and Gwen in Lawrence!

  27. garyr (anonymous) says…

1793, Todd Haley made it to the Super Bowl, he didn't win one. Cards lost to the Steelers.

  28. biggunz (anonymous) says…

First of all, Lew Perkins is a stud A.D. The football team would not have any of the new facilties if it wasn't for him. The basketball team wouldn't have the new facilties if it wasn't for him. Some of you may not like the way he does business but he gets sh*t done and that's a fact.

Secondly, Mangino is a good coach but he ain't great. With the help of Perkins he has made the football team respectable but there was no way to go but up. He's had a winning record in the Big 12 conference ONCE in eight years, and that was in 2007. Of course that was also the year they went to the Orange Bowl. They also did not play OU, UT, or TT that year and non conference was cake.

I'm not saying he should stay and I'm not saying he should be fired but perhaps he's taken this program from crap to average and that's as good as it's gonna get. Yeah, I remember the really bad years but so what. Who wants to settle for average?

That's true. Mangino is the 16th-highest paid NCAA Div. I football coach at $2.3M, tied with Paul Johnson of Georgia Tech. (I'd be set for life with one year of his salary.)

Some notable coaches who make less than Mangino:
Frank Beamer - Virginia Tech ($2.1M), Jeff Tedford - California ($1.85M), and Joe Paterno - Penn State ($1.5M). Mangino makes about twice as much as Bill Snyder at K-State or Mike Gundy at O-State. He makes a little over three times as much as Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern.

  34. lctchr1 (anonymous) says…

  37. cajayfan (anonymous) says…

This whole thing makes me sick. A bunch of whiny kids and their mommies and daddies go behind the coaches back. They have ruined the season for the rest of the team. Do you really think any coach of any caliber would come to a school where a bunch of whiners get the attention of the AD? Grow up. This is how most of this generation deals with things..mommy! daddy! I should know, I am recruiter for a large corp. I interview anyone whose parent is involved and they don't even get a look. Grow up and learn the meaning of loyalty. Mangino deserves better than this.

  38. puddleglum (anonymous) says…

    mangino does deserve better.

can't believe students and coaches (?) are going behind his back.

  39. irunsowhat (anonymous) says…

    @red_devil

I don't understand why no other schools have come at Mangino. I do think once Joe Pa dies and there is a vacancy at Penn State, Mangino will be the first one they call. He is from Pennsylvania and has shown potential in recruiting as well as coaching.

    @everyone else

I don't know what has happened this year with the on and off field issues, but as far as any of us know, it could be a freak accident. The fact that they have lost 5 games is a bit odd, but at the same time, it happens. Teams lose games, teams aren't as good as what they thought they would be, so get over it.

I don't know why anybody would be calling for Mangino's head after they have put this program on the map. No longer is Kansas flirting with Iowa State and Baylor for last place in the conference. They may have a poor record this year, but they are still a team that causes the other teams to prepare for, unlike the past Jayhawks that could have been beat by Lawrence High...

We will see the outcome of all of this, but I do think it would absolutely insane if Mangino lost his job for this type of thing (losing record, player behavior). Bottom line, this guy has put you on the map.

Interesting link but don't give much credit to Glazer's comments. Kansas has good up and coming receivers (McDougald), good up and coming running back (Toben Oporum), a young offensive line which is getting better, linebacker (Huldon Tharp) will be a stud. When given the opportunity, I think Pick has potential at QB. They have returning talent. I did hear Toben is unhappy. No sh*t, guy should be starting every game and he's been rarely used until last game.

I agree with Lew Perkins to a certain extent. He is taking the temperature of a program that will support the expansion of Memorial Stadium, increased athletics giving (which exceeds academic giving). His meeting with players is justified. I am a die-hard fan and I believe the amount he is paid justifies the need to win--now! Lew is under the gun and if I were in his shoes, I would have to re-evaluate Mangino's future. If he has a player incident as my inside source has confirmed to me, this is the perfect opportunity to scapegoat him out. Mangino will be gone. KU has a much easier schedule next season (take a look for yourself) and Perkins knows that having a new "high caliber" replacement go 10-2 (6-2 in Big 12) with a loss to Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game will reassure Kansans and KU Athletics that football is precious to taxpayers and alumni.

Mark my words . . . literally, Mangino is history. We will have a big name coach here and I promise an immensely successful 2010 season as stated above with our 1st Big 12 North title . . . Perkins gets his support for the expansion, Sayers rallies the money, and the bottomline is that our beloved Jayhawks are better than Mangino left them.

Mark, thanks for the memories. We will never forget your rightful place in our history. Beat Texas and they should bronze a statue ... beat Mizzou and we will plant flowers around it ... win that bowl game and you will have 53 career wins which coincidentally makes you the greatest in KU Football History. Just another Mark for your successor to set his sights on and another notch in your belt to earn more and achieve more in another program.

This is a business. I wish everyone would stop thinking about "Jayhawks Athletics" or "KU" . . . Lew has a contract to enforce and Mangino isn't owning up to his end. KUAC could lose millions if we don't make a change.

Sorry to break the news, folks.

Comparing North Carolina basketball and Kansas football... is like comparing the speaking abilities of Barack Obama with John McCain

I love how a couple of people say it's a "fact" that most of the players don't like Mangino. If that were even a "guess" then you would have been hearing from the likes of Fine, MacAnderson, etc., etc.

The reason KU has money for Lew to spend is from Bill Self winning the NCAA title and Mangino winning an Orange Bowl. Even Reesing said he has nothing bad to say about Mangino and being a senior would have no reason to keep quiet.

I'm guessing you have a couple of upset upperclassmen who aren't playing now and griping to Lew. They have to do an investigation to go through the motions. The ESPN.com article explains it much better than it does here.

my god, you mean to tell me that as big as Mangino is , he could actually get close enough to a football player, come on! They should be flattered. Hard to believe that Mangino as short as he is and as tall as the players are, something is amiss here.

As I have said before, Lew and Mangino should bow out and move on before the losing streak arrives again.

We have an astute Chancellor at KU and I bet she, being a trained clinical psychologist, will call the two in and when she gets done, lets see then how this turns out.

Winners do not "invite" opportunity for distraction, Mr. Wright. This complaint needed to wait for the end of the season. We will lose every one of the rest of our games, and do so embarrasingly. Poked in the chest. This ain't like working for Bill Gates; this is football! I've seen coaches do that on ESPN.

Lew will leave soon, Mangino should just go ahead and retire and enjoy what few years he has left. No one in his health situation can last long, really now., no wonder he is "cranky".

Yeah, facilities, rah rah, ku sports fans not only demonstrate what a bunch of unloyal and pathetic losers they are by allowing all kinds of crap to go on while he is winning and then one bad season and suddenly the long knives come out. And funny the real sports fans had no problems with the fieldhouse as it was but guess when you prostitute out the sports program to the wealthy who are only their to be seen and make deals we should assume it needs a side show to impress them. Whoever thought a university that prided itself on tradition would stoop to the level it is now. Oh yeah, lots of money, big deal when you sell it out and now have issues never seen before at KU.

    Poked him? Facebook friends??

Golden Fruitcake for papakeno. Good one. Can anyone define "poke"?

  85. JackRipper (anonymous) says…

Come to think of it your name, biggunz, shows what all that swaggering has done for KU. Wow, biggunz, sounds like a name that needs to go with a big suv and a loud mouth. Oh how I long for the Frederick's days of soft spoken and class. Had the same level of success without all the braggadocios bull that isn't KU. Suppose that's what we get from too many graduating who came to KU for sports instead of academics.

  86. honeychild (Mel Briscoe) says…

poked??! wow..... THAT's what they're doing an investigation about? seriously? that sounds so effing wimpy. i mean, really....

  87. The_Original_Bob (anonymous) says…

This has gone from punching to choking to shoving to poking. By this afternoon it will have probably devolved into tickling.

  88. Frightwig (anonymous) says…

JackRipper please, for the love of Pete, get your meds adjusted.

I think it's funny that some of you blowhards are getting worked into such a froth over this. A football coach poked a played in the chest. Who cares? I used to get hit a lot harder than that by nuns when I was in grade school but I never ran to the media about it. This issue says a lot more about the player who got poked than it does about Mangino.

  89. JackRipper (anonymous) says…

Frightwig, sounds like the nuns were effective getting you to follow mindlessly what you have been instructed. Sorry to challenge your view of selected sports.

  90. pfunk81 (anonymous) says…

HbJayhawk, it doesn't hurt to dream big but if you think some new coach is just going to run in here and win a Big 12 north title, I'd love to have what you are smoking. Maybe Lew can coach the team?

  91. autie (anonymous) says…

I remember seeing a coach bust a clipboard over a kids head in JUCO. Sometimes the coach has to get their undivided attention in order to make a specific point. It's all part of it. I guess the player got his feelings hurt. And that's why nobody likes football. Nobody. The coach hurts you, sometimes very badly. Oh..come on, you knew that was coming sooner or later.

  92. Ricky_Vaughn (anonymous) says…

    LarryNative (Anonymous) says…

And after Roy left…..KU won a national championship.

And before Mangino got here KU won...................................................gotta go back a ways.....................................................

  93. parrothead8 (anonymous) says…

A football field is a different world from walking around campus or downtown. If it hurts your feelings too much for your coach to yell mean words at you or poke you in the chest, you should probably try a different sport...maybe cribbage. Or beer pong, like a regular college student.

  94. tbaker (anonymous) says…

And the winner is: Parrothead8! Couldn't agree more.

I wonder how the whiners complaining about getting chewed out would feel about the form of humiliation that comes from riding the bench? They would do well to consider the fact there are a lot of young men who would jump at the chance to get profanity screamed in their face if it meant they got to play. Instead of stabbing their coach in the back these ingrates should count their blessings and try harder.

  95. redmorgan (anonymous) says…

Poked him? Are you kidding me? Geez, kids are such candy asses anymore.

  96. HogJiver (anonymous) says…

It's time for the two of them to sit down with the
"Old Jayhawk" and have a beer.

  97. 9070811 (anonymous) says…

I don't know why some of you are picking on the player. We have no idea as to what the real story is. We all know that it has to be a lot more than poking. We see poking on the sidelines all the time.

  98. Newell_Post (anonymous) says…

... because he poked him? My coaches kicked and punched guys. My coaches were all WWII combat veterans that didn't give a rodent's colon about your delicate sensibilities.....

  99. JackRipper (anonymous) says…

9070811, you mean something like out of Deliverance?

  100. Ricky_Vaughn (anonymous) says…

If Lew called that special meeting and is conducting an investigation, I'm willing to bet there's more going on than chest poking...think about it.

  101. JackRipper (anonymous) says…

Oh Ricky, I think we all know what is going on, just interesting how it is going to go down.

  102. Ricky_Vaughn (anonymous) says…

Agreed. I just think it's unfair to call out the player...with all this smoke, there has to be a pretty big fire somewhere...

  103. ralphralph (anonymous) says…

Mangino ate Woody Hayes, and he's trying to get out!

  104. RETICENT_IRREVERENT (Ronaldo Ignacio) says…

  108. pace (anonymous) says…

i would say Lew was the right man, he is willing, ready and able to squash, run over and cheat alumni, the town, and the University to keep the Athletic Corporation in the black and on top.
I thought I would just cut and paste the rest.
This issue would be nullified if the “team was "winning” is the type of mentality that excuses poor behavior with sports winning. It is the person who hides from personal responsibility because they find permission in the mob mentality. It says lets get drunk, let's trash other's property, let's vomit on others, let's bribe players, beat up people, winning is the only thing. What miserable person thinks that one can be crass or rude because how they “feel” about a team. It is this corruption of sports culture that has taken sports to it's decayed decadent excess instead of healthy athleticism and sportsmanship. There is no movement to keep sportsmanship or concern for the individual in sports today. There is no I in team, just a $ sign. Today's sports are a drug that harms youth as surely as drink. Over played, pushed, corrupted, propagandized, injured, young people supporting the adrenalin rush of tailgaters. Youth continually told winning is the only thing. There is no character building just justification of behaviors, excuses. The major justification for allowing sports fever to be virulent is that it is a cash cow. If that is all we want, lets make crime legal and tax it.

  109. toe (anonymous) says…

Lew found an excuse. He has been looking for one ever since he got here. He so desperately wants his own man. Shame on the fans for demanding winning above all else.

  110. RKLOG (Mark Andrew) says…

Natural selection has more to do with adapting to today's problems more than it has to do with being a winner. Tomorrow it can be a world dominated my sea horses.

  111. pace (anonymous) says…

winning is empty and vain. Great victory can be gained in loss.
