Mark Mangino press conference, Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009

In his weekly press conference, Coach Mark Mangino discusses the Nebraska game, the upcoming game against Texas, and an investigation the athletic department is conducting. Enlarge video

Kansas University athletic director Lew Perkins met Monday night with the school's football players to discuss concerns about football coach Mark Mangino brought to his attention by one of the current players and others with ties to the football program.

Arist Wright, a senior linebacker, was the player who first went to Perkins, and complained that Mangino poked him in the chest in the days leading up to KU's game at Colorado.

"I can confirm an internal review is under way," Perkins said in a quote released by the school. "It involves a personnel matter, and as a result, is confidential. It would be inappropriate for me to provide further information right now."

Mangino said he met with Perkins for 10 to 15 minutes before the athletic director met with players, but wasn't present for Perkins' meeting with the players.

"If you want to know what was said, I'm not disclosing it. He's the one who's disclosing information about it, I'm not," Mangino said.

In their eighth year under Mangino, the Jayhawks (5-5) take a five-game losing streak into this week's contest against Texas.

Keep Mangino, dump Perkins and wipe the noses of the whiners.

Calling wright a linebacker should get you fired, bowen and o coord need to go. defense has been terrible since young left, defensive backs and lbackers are soft except for stuckey. This years problem finally comes out bowen has been recruiting a bunch of babies not football players.

Wow, when you lose at KU they'll frame you anyway they can. Oh no, not the poke in the chest, not while playing football! Oh my that is just unheard of! LOL!!! Please, chancellor, rid us of this nonsense, let the head roll but let it be all of theirs. The former chancellor allowed a nice midwest university to be prostituted out to the not so bright but wealthy alumni and it is time to say enough is enough! Also quick and end the whole gridiron club nonsense.

football players aren't coddled as some might want to be, favoritism by a coach always alienates some who belive they are the chosen,

after all, Mangino may have some ideas about coaching but at KU it is all about appearances.

Just wondering if Lew likes to be seated with Mangino at fancy whing dings? Last time I saw Lew at the hotel, he had someone smaller than him, it is all about power in management.

Pick a tall boss, intimidate the subordinates.

Mangino and Lew should both bow out, because the losing streak will come again. Then what?

btw...I doubt anyone in Oklahoma wants Stoops to go...He's about as solid of a coach in the Big 12, along with Mack Brown...Stoops has had success for years now at OU, unlike Mangino.

0

Hitman779 4 years, 5 months ago

Wow, I thought it was just KU football fans that were ignorant, but I guess it's just KU fans in general...

Look, first off, Bill Snyder has owned KU since he's been at K-State, and MU was the only good team they played in '07...and yes, KU played essentially no one else that year. Yes, they beat VT in the orange bowl (that is called postseason), and VT was good and I was surprised and gave KU credit for winning.

And SERIOUSLY...I said BSU, Utah and TCU are better and have better tradition than KU...meaning Football...how is it that you Jayhawks weave every conversation into basketball? ...which is why I mentioned above you are always saying "wait til basketball season" because any sports topic, or even school topic, turns into some sort of basketball conversation for KU fans. Look, we get it, you have good basketball teams, has NOTHING to do with football, baseball or any other sport. I figured we'd stay on topic of FOOTBALL on a comment section for football story. SO in football, TCU, BSU and Utah all are better than KU and have better football programs.

btw, loved the open-mindedness of saying that KU accepts all types and don't discriminate...why discriminate against winning? Losers need to exist in this world as well...be open minded!:-)

Time to clean house with all the money suckers in the athletic department. The AD has been ripping off all the fans and trying to suck every dollar from the pockets of loyal KU fans. Let's get back to basics.

A source briefed on the situation told ESPN's Joe Schad that one particular incident allegedly involved Mangino yelling at and making contact with a player earlier this season. According to another source, some players have threatened to transfer because of what they perceive as having been spoken to in an inappropriate manner.

No sure what that comment meant but I would take BSU, Utah, and TCU to beat KU. Oh, and I'd take TCU's coach.

0

Jeff Kilgore 4 years, 5 months ago

Instead of discussing Mangino, let's talk about us, the KU football fans. First of all, this entire issue reeks of hypocrisy. Not one poster here hasn't seen or heard about Mangino's volcanic tirade against the Pendleton kid. We saw it. We laughed. Who objected? Very, very few. We won the freaking Orange Bowl, and it wasn't against "no one" as someone suggested above. Where was our sense of outrage then?

Secondly, Bill Self uses the exact same language in the huddle. Remember how he objected to having the huddle filmed during a time out? Remember that? If an opponent gains too many offensive rebounds or if we throw the ball away too many times in a row, Mt. Bill will erupt just as fast, and that's okay because. . .

And that's that. If Mgo was coaching an 8-2 team, Wright might have some complaints but the general mood would be good.

Then I hear comments about Mangino's weight being an embarrassment to the university. I thought Kansas was the school that celebrated diversity and didn't discriminate based on a person's lifestyle choice. We will discriminate against losing.

Overall, I don't condone Mgo's tirades, but I sure as heck like winning games and seeing teams perform well. Those who can't stomach 5-5 have to understand that teams underperform as well as overperform. Thanks to Mgo, we've seen far more of the first than the last. But fans are fickle and little can please us. At OU they probably want Stoops out. That's just as stupid in my opinion.

Mgo will succeed in a new coaching position if it comes to that, and I as a Mgo guy wish him the best. I also doubt very strongly if we can attract an effective HC the way this stuff is going on. You can bet that ADLP is Covering His Administrative position. Where am I wrong? Help me.

Mangino has had eight years to make this program a success. After the Orange Bowl the program should of gone no where but up. But as we all know this hasn't happened. Also, this can't work if you don't workwell with your coaching staff then there is absolutly no way to win.

"I'd take BSU, Utah or TCU in the big 12 over KU any day. They have talent and more tradition thank the Jayhawks."

I don't know what in the world you are talking about! I'm just going to assume that you haven't ever attended a Jayhawk sporting event! Players from all over the country will admit that Allen Fieldhouse is probably the hardest venue to play in due to all of the Jayhawk spirit. As far as tradition KU easily has some of the greatest traditions in the country! Also, even if were haveing a losing season we still attend the game and support our teams!

Biggunz, you're right. I think Mangino is 4/4 with KSU and 4/3 with MU.

0

BigAl, Although I'm not positive, Mangino is even with Kstate at best. That has only happened recently because he was owned by Buck Tooth Bill. And it may not be good news that grandpa is back in mancrappin.

LarryNative (Anonymous) says…

You gotta point there. Now think about this...Mangino's overall record is 50-46. His Big 12 Conference record is 23-39. So we've gone from being stuck as an embarrassment to being stuck as mediocre. Thank god for the 3-4 cupcakes we play every year. We all should be proud.

0

i bet mangino talks bad to the players when they goof off and makes them sweat. bad bad mean man. these players are all prima donnas i should be held up on pedestals for the fat little girl friends to praise

0

Hitman779... Say whatever you want but just keep in mind that Mangino has a winning record against both Kansas State and Missouri. I assume then that you would also drop KSU and Missouri from the Big12??????

In addition to Mangino's winning record against both KSU and MU in football, Kansas absolutely OWNS both of those programs in basketball.

Boo freaking hoo to all the girls that think coach Mangio is too tough. Parents don't let your girls play for him if you think he might bruise their oh so tender egos. Did it ever occur to anyone that kids these days are to delicately cared for to have the hutzpah that ball players of yore had. sheesh this is not creative writing. As far as LP.....there are few who can donate millions and he is rapidly loosing the millions that can and want to donate few. He also treats alumni players like crap, even if they did make it big, with big NFL paychecks.

KU football has increased its talent on offense, and that's it. Mangino has made it better, but it's been nothing but hype since the Jayhawks backed into a BCS bowl in '07 when they played absolutely no one.

With this hype this year of winning the Big 12 north and possibly the Big 12, it's no question Mangino will come under fire, especially when it's more than likely KU will not go bowling at all this year.

KU will be a mediocre program, and that's about it, which is why it's surprising that they had such a big expansion of the football stadium, seriously, where did that come from?!

I'd take BSU, Utah or TCU in the big 12 over KU any day. They have talent and more tradition thank the Jayhawks.

Anywhoo...just keep on your typical "wait til basketball season comments up" and realize you can't have a top notch football program.

It will never happen. He can't fit through the narrow staircase that leads down from the ND locker room. His obesity has made him and KU the laughing stock of the Big 12.

Mangino is making more per year than some of us will see in a lifetime. For those kind of dollars you need to produce constantly. He has not. Time to move on.

e next questions is who would want to come here.

That's easy to answer:

Gary Patterson (TCU), No Bronco Mendenhall (BYU), No Kyle Wittingham (Utah), No Chris Peterson (BSU) No

As I put on the other article

Kirk Ferentz = Notre Dame Bob Stoops = Iowa Mangino = OU

0

After all of this uproar Mangino's future at the University of Kansas is doomed. People have been calling for his head after the performance of the team this year and an incident like this only adds to the fire.

Gary Patterson (TCU), Bronco Mendenhall (BYU), Kyle Wittingham (Utah), Chris Peterson (BSU)

mangino is the best football coach KU has ever had He made football relevant in your punky city and after a 500 year folks want to fire him and players want to whine I do not know what they are whining about but they should stop crying and try to play better ball. Did he yell at you Who cares play ball chumps you have a great coach and quit telling mommy on him you chumps no wonder the bball team kicked your a$$

0

i'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you honey.. it's on youtube and people can decide for themselves whether or not he's too mean :) some players probably get motivated, some probably shut down!

0

Mel Briscoe 4 years, 5 months ago

magoo, i mentioned youtube already and got a really sarcastic response from a few folks on here-- i'm not commenting on whether or not i think mangino is "too mean" to the players, i was just telling people that the youtube spots got attention in several national news outlets at the time.

0

missmagoo 4 years, 5 months ago

Other news sources are saying it's about an altercation between Mangino and a player, and also how he treats the players in general. I guess there is also a committee of parents to players who are bringing forth complaints. Just check You Tube.. there is one video of him cursing out a player and it's pretty well known he has a hot temper. Check the KC Star, they always have better info :) (no offense LJW)

Does Perkins know anything about coaching?

He knows plenty about how to send badly needed Lawrence,Kansas revenue to Kansas City.

Is he worried about the KU elite fans who spend big bucks for their spots that allow them not to sit with the everyday people?

Just think folks what any one of us could do with the money Mangino will walk away if he gets fired. Things like fix our cars, take our lovers to dinner, put our kids through school without blinking and eye and donate big time to save the wetlands. Those golden parachutes treat failing executives quite well.

lets look at this a little, Mangino 8 yrs -- 1 yr with an above .500 conference record, no big 12 north titles much less big 12 titles, the only above .500 big 12 season he didn't play the top big 12 south teams, all this from the 16th highest paid coach in the country, surely for that kind of money we should see better -- let me be the first to throw out the name of cromwell

honeychild, it takes only 6 wins to get into a bowl game. When you stack up your non-conference schedule with 3 or 4 power puffs, making just any bowl game is trivial.

Yes one of our bowl games was a BCS game, but like I said, only one in 8 years is NOT that impressive, when you consider that teams like Utah and Boise State have each had wins in BCS games in the same time period. Utah has done so with two different coaches.

I will concede that Mangino is the most successful coach in KU football history. But consider the context of that statement before we deify him.

Give me a break Utah (MWC) and Boise state (WAC) LOL they play in real tough conferences. Like to see how they would fair in a power conference where they have more that one good team in it. Throw BSU or Utah in the Big 12, SEC, Big 10 etc. and watch them get pounded game after game which would equal no BCS bowls. Compairing teams like that are like apples to oranges.

0

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that one of his star players suggested they just skip this Saturday's game @ Texas to be "injury free" for the finale vs. Missouri to be bowl eligilble. Rumor has it that he charged the player like a wildebeast and had to be restrained by the entire O-line and 2 coaches. Sounds like he was one punch short of taking the Raiders head-coaching position. We love you Mark. I like the way you fire us up before we play #3 Texas. Hopefully this gets the guys motivated to win a big one.

These football players....what a bunch of pansies.....everything is all peachy keen when they win, but since they've been too busy pounding on basketball players and started losing....they gotta put it on someone other than themselves.

Make no mistake, there is no love here for Mangino given his outrageously high salary.....but what is even more outragageous is a bunch of steroid filled kitty kats crying in their collective beer because they've got to realize they're a Grade B football operation which really should be playing against Junior College teams because that's all they can beat.....other than basketball players. Oh yeah....I love all their manly tatoos.....that KU football team....what a class act.....
