Kansas women's basketball freshman and former Lawrence High standout Tania Jackson will red-shirt this season, KU coach Bonnie Henrickson announced Tuesday.
Jackson, a 6-foot-2 forward, missed her senior season at LHS after suffering a knee injury. She had surgery on the knee last fall.
“This is really the best thing for Tania,” Henrickson said in a release. “Taking a redshirt will allow her to get completely healthy. It will provide her an opportunity to compete every day in practice. Not only will she be able to improve her own game, but she can also challenge her teammates day in and day out and help grow their game.”
Jackson played in both of KU's two exhibition games, contributing one point and three rebounds in eight minutes.
The Jayhawks open the 2009-10 regular season Sunday with a 2 p.m. home game against Oral Roberts.

I'm relieved to here this decision was made. Tania is a very good talent but in watching her in the first two exhibition games, it was easy to tell that she wasn't quite back from the surgery. She'll have this whole year to get healthy and this will also help balance out the classes as there are a lot of freshmen playing this year. I'm excited for her future, especially since she is a Lawrench High product.

In general, you can't miss your senior year in high school and play in the Big 12 the next.

Ummmm obvioulsy you can if she's getting a full ride to play, and was highly recruited to other big conference schools.

You could watch the last exhibition game and see that she wasn't quite comfortable yet with the knee. The announcers mentioned it, too. She has tweaked it at KU and this will give her time to completely heal. She will be a great player. She'll be fine.
