A Lawrence business hopes to raise awareness that there are 285 million people worldwide living with diabetes.
Scantron Corp., formerly NCS Pearson, will be having a walk at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in its East Hills Business Park neighborhood to remind people that Saturday is World Diabetes Day.
The walk begins at the business, 3833 Greenway Drive, and is open to its approximately 90 employees and the community.
Deanna St. Cyr, facilities coordinator, said the company is just doing its part to raise awareness about diabetes.
This year’s theme is “Understand Diabetes and Take Control.” According to the International Diabetes Federation, people with diabetes must deliver 95 percent of their own care, so it’s important that they receive ongoing education. The federation also estimates that more than 344 million people worldwide are at risk for type 2 diabetes, which and be prevented in many cases by maintaining a healthy weight and exercising.
