Fresh off of its run to the Class 6A state title game, the Free State High boys soccer team received some serious accolades from the Sunflower League.
In addition to naming FSHS coach Jason Pendleton as the league’s coach of the year, the Sunflower League soccer coaches recognized three Firebirds as first-team selections.
Seniors Daniel Chance (midfield) and Alan Hornbaker (defense) were joined on the first team by junior forward Diego Gonzalez.
Free State senior Tyler Smith (midfield) and junior Tony Libeer (defense) earned honorable-mention nods.
In addition, Chance, Hornbaker and Gonzalez were named to the first-team all-Central Region, where they were joined by Lawrence High forward Tor Fornelli.
Pendleton also was named the Central Region’s coach of the year while Smith, Libeer and Preston Newsome earned second-team honors.
Lawrence High seniors Will Burg and Matthias Reiber and freshman Justin Riley earned second-team nods, while Free State senior Jackson McClure was named an honorable mention goalkeeper.
Free State finished its best season in school history with a 16-5 record and a Class 6A state runner-up trophy. Lawrence High finished the season 4-12-1.

Congrats to all.
Just curious...I see these recognitions all the time, but how does the process work? Does each coach nominate a certain number of players from their own team and then others vote?
