Firebirds’ Resseguie cleared to play

Kirk Resseguie (34) looks for a hole in the first half of the Free State and Olathe Northwest game Friday in Olathe.

Kirk Resseguie, the leading rusher on Free State High’s football team, has been given clearance to play in Friday night’s Class 6A state playoff game against Olathe North.

Resseguie, who has rushed for 1,099 yards and scored a team-high 17 touchdowns, tweaked a knee in last Friday’s 38-7 win against Olathe East in the first round of the playoffs. Resseguie suffered an MCL sprain early in the third quarter and did not return. However, he was at practice on Monday.

“The doctor said I can play as long as I wear a brace,” Resseguie said. “I’m really relieved because I want to play.”

The Firebirds, who have been mostly injury-free all season, did lose one player in the O-East game, however. Senior wide receiver Bo Schneider suffered a broken collarbone in the first half. Also a Free State basketball player, Schneider won’t be able to participate in that sport until the second semester at the earliest.

Free State (8-2) will meet the unbeaten Eagles (10-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at Olathe District Activities Center. O-North toppled the Firebirds, 38-20, five weeks ago.
