November 9, 2009

If you've heard about Twitter but aren't sure about how to jump in and get the most out of it, a free event Wednesday may be your opportunity to get a little bit of help.
The World Company and members of the Lawrence Twitter community are joining together to offer two sessions on the basics of Twitter and how to get yourself set up on the rapidly expanding communications and social networking site.
Sessions will be at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., at the Lawrence Arts Center, and will include a brief presentation followed by hands-on session in small groups, led by active members of the local Twitter community.
The program is free but attendees are encouraged to register in advance for the session they'd like to attend.
Questions concerning the program should be directed to Ben Smith, The World Company's Social Media Manager.

We'll cover Facebook separately at a later date.
As for waste of energy, you might be surprised! Something we'll show people is how they can use Twitter in a very dynamic way to connect with the local community here in Lawrence. A lot of people just “don't get it” and are really missing out. Here in Lawrence we have an amazingly active online community that is connecting businesses, organizations, and individuals in an entirely new way. And importantly isn't just connecting them online but is bringing them together offline for both business networking and social events.
For example, check out www.lawrencetweetup.com - people that connected via Twitter and now are part of a very active social group.
Feel free to join us and learn about how you can use Twitter in a very positive way.

Facebook is bad enough…but I can at least give it some sort of value. Twitter is plain pathetic.

I don't use Twitter, but I love the irony of people who spend countless hours commenting on a third-rate newspaper's website calling it a “waste of time.” How is Twitter that different from what we do here?

Well said, Ben!
Twitter is for marketing.
Marketing is for $.
I could even show you how to set up multiple Twitter accounts, keep them all and gain thousands of followers in a very short time.
Thousands of followers can mean thousands of $…………monthly, weekly or even daily.

Marion - Yes, Twitter can be an excellent marketing tool BUT it is so much more than that. The side on Twitter that really appeals to me is the ability it gives to network and develop new contacts, whether in the industry or the community, and to form valuable relationships with those contacts both on and offline. Twitter is a fantastic tool for developing the true “social” side of social media.
