Unfair decision
To the editor:
Something about the Kansas University football team has been very wrong during the past three games, and I am NOT referring to the fact that these games were lost, but to the circumstances, which were the main causes for the losses, being withheld by the KU coaching staff. We all recognized that star quarterback, Todd Reesing, was greatly underperforming in these three losses to Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech. What we didn’t know was that Reesing had been hurt early in the Colorado game and was suffering from a pulled groin muscle.
I believe that it was very unfair for Coach Mangino to continue to start and play Reesing in these three games as he has been mostly ineffective due to this injury. He has uncharacteristically thrown interceptions, been sacked and fumbled often. It was unfair to Reesing, his teammates, KU fans and students to have this disabled hero placed in the position and not being able to perform at 100 percent of his ability. It would have been the better choice if Reesing had been held out of these games until he was capable of performing at the level which we had been used to seeing.
We, the fans and KU supporters would have understood if Kerry Meier or Kale Pick had replaced Reesing. I can appreciate the need for secrecy of not disclosing injuries whereby an opponent be informed, but why even play Reesing at his reduced level of ability? The coaches owe Reesing many apologies.
