Free State gymnasts win regional; LHS fifth

? Free State High’s gymnastics team won the west regional title Saturday at Olathe South, qualifying the team for the state tournament.

The Lawrence High team finished fifth, missing the cut, but Maria Carvajal placed fifth in the uneven bars to qualify for state in that event.

The Firebirds were led by Drue Davis, who won the all-around after winning the vault, beam and floor exercise events and placing third on the uneven bars.

Free State’s Kelcy Bowers took third in the all-around, placing second on bars, fourth on beam and fifth on vault and floor exercise.

The state tournament will be at noon Saturday at Newton High School.
