Junction City ? Law enforcement agents in two central Kansas counties believe a Fort Riley soldier is responsible for at least three rapes and five abductions in Junction City and Manhattan over a two-month span starting in late March.

Pvt. Tony Tremayne Lewis, 19, was arrested early Friday after being questioned at the military base and a search warrant was executed on his vehicle and barracks. He was being held Friday in Geary County on three counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of rape, two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of aggravated sodomy, one count of aggravated burglary and one count of criminal threat.

All of those charges are in connection with crimes in Junction City, including the rapes of two women, officials said. Similar charges are expected to be filed in Riley County next week for three attacks that included at least one rape in Manhattan.

Officials said that altogether there were five abductions or attempted abductions between March 23 and May 21, and three of those victims were raped. In three of the attacks, the suspect forced the victims to withdraw cash from ATMs.

Police said two of the attacks began in apartment complex parking lots, two were in residences and one was on the street. All of them were between the hours of 1 a.m. and 2:45 a.m., police said.

The suspect was armed with a handgun and covered his face during the attacks, police said. Victims described him as having a distinct accent. Lt. Michael Life, who is in charge of investigations for the Junction City Police Department, said Lewis has a pronounced accent.

As of Friday afternoon, Lewis had not made his initial appearance and was not believed to have a lawyer.

He initially was stopped on Wednesday in a residential neighborhood in Manhattan after a Riley County police officer saw suspicious behavior, police said. The officer determined that Lewis fit the description of the suspect in several rapes and forwarded his observation to investigators.

Lewis is assigned to Alpha Company A-601st Aviation Support Battalion, a base spokesman said Friday.
