Teacher, school get award for being ‘green’

The recycling program at a local school earned honors Monday from Pet World.

Pet World gave its Greener World Award to Broken Arrow School and to fourth-grade teacher Ginny Turvey. Pet World owner Sherry Emerson said the award recognizes a teacher that “makes a positive impact on the future of our planet through public education.”

Turvey said she was stunned to receive the award and was quick to credit members of her fourth-grade class.

“Fourth-graders really coordinate the effort throughout the school. … We decided this year to take our recycling efforts up a notch and include the whole school,” Turvey said.

Turvey received $500, while Broken Arrow received $1,500 for environmental programming.

This is the first Greener World Award, but Emerson said it won’t be the last.
