Man flees would-be robbers who accosted him with a gun

A 23-year-old Lawrence man was unharmed after fleeing two robbers who demanded money at 2:15 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said the man was approached by two suspects, one of whom was armed with a handgun, in the 1300 block of West Seventh Street near Louise’s West.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said the victim was walking home alone from downtown when he noticed a car pull up behind him on Seventh Street. Two men exited the light-colored passenger vehicle’s rear doors and approached the victim.

“According to him, they had a weapon and demanded that he relinquish all of his personal goods and money,” Hadl said. “He simply responded by saying, ‘I have nothing,’ and took off running.”

The man did not see which way the suspect vehicle went, nor did he get a clear description of the car. Hadl said police would be contacting area businesses for external surveillance video of the incident.

Hadl said it was still too early to speculate whether this robbery attempt was related to Sunday morning’s armed robbery near 10th and Mississippi streets.
