Lawrence police are encouraging people to use good judgment while celebrating the completion of finals and this weekend’s graduation at Kansas University.

“It’s a good time of the year for people, it’s spring time, people are finishing school, that’s a big step in a lot of people’s life … and they want to celebrate,” said Sgt. Bill Cory, police spokesman. “We tell people that are over 21 to just please celebrate responsibly and take care of yourself.”

For those planning to celebrate at Clinton Lake, Kansas Wildlife and Parks game wardens and natural resource officers said they’ll be conducting saturation patrols this evening on and around the lake.

“The intent of the selective enforcement effort will be to target underage drinking,” said Aaron Henrichs, natural resource officer. He said state parks are often the site of underage drinking, “due to the seclusion the areas offer.”

Multiple tragic examples of underage drinking have been reported in Lawrence this spring, including the alcohol-related deaths of an underaged KU student in his fraternity house and an underaged KU student who fell from a roof.

Cory encouraged people to look out for themselves and others, and said they should call for help if they see someone who has had too much to drink.

“Everybody needs to be responsible,” he said. “I expect everybody to have a good time and be happy that they accomplished something, but to do things responsibly.”
