Soldier’s early return makes kids’ day
One Langston Hughes Elementary student received a special surprise at school today. Enlarge video
It was Daddy Doughnut Day at Langston Hughes School on Wednesday, and Jaida Hammond thought her father wouldn’t be there.
He was on his way home for leave from Iraq.
Or so she thought.
U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Eric Hammond surprised his daughter — and members of her first-grade class — just before school let out.
He was met with a hug, a few tears and a leftover doughnut.
“I was glad to be able to include the kids in it because they’ve sent me packages during the time that I’ve been gone,” Hammond said. “To include the kids along with Jaida was a great feeling.”
Hammond, who is on a 15-day leave, is scheduled to conclude his tour in October.
And before those 15 days are up, Jaida has one thing she wants to do with her dad.
“Play tennis with him,” she said.

AWWW! Now I have to reapply mascara.
Not really- I don't wear makeup, but if I did, I'd certainly need a touchup! Great story. Brought a tear or two to my eyes.

What a great surprise for Jaida, her classmates, and teachers!! "Happy tears" were probably the accessory of the day at Langston Hughes.
Have fun with your dad Jaida.

What a wonderful surprise for Jaida! And thanks to her daddy and all the other men and women in the armed forces for their service, patriotism and sacrifice. It is very much appreciated.
Eric, be safe until you return in October. Prayers for safe return for all service men and women are a constant.
