County to receive food, shelter funding

Douglas County has been chosen to receive about $27,000 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county.

Funds for the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program have been made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Local agencies applying to share in the funding must:

• Be private, voluntary nonprofits or units of government.

• Be eligible to receive federal funds.

• Have an accounting system.

• Practice nondiscrimination.

• Have demonstrated ability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs.

Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for these funds must contact local board chairwoman Jane Blocher at the American Red Cross, 843-3550, to receive an application. The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Thursday.
