FSHS wins regional tennis title

? Free State High’s boys tennis team claimed a Class 6A regional championship with two individual titles and one second-place finish Thursday.

But the trophy did not come without a price.

Four Firebirds wound up with minor injuries — one had the entire team escort him to the emergency room for a precautionary check-up after the meet — but each player powered through and helped deliver the team championship along with three berths in next week’s state tournament.

“It was just a crazy day,” Free State coach John Richey said. “But they got it finished and got the job done. It’s been great. It’s something the entire team can get excited about.”

In singles, junior Michael Swank outlasted teammate — and roommate — Rodolfo Gauto Mariotti, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the championship match.

“We had a good talk before we went out, and we both played without really looking at who the guy on the other side of the net was,” Swank said.

In doubles, Blaine Kaehr and Dravid Joseph won by knocking off ex-coach Jon Renberger’s Olathe South team in the title match.

After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6, Kaehr and Joseph stormed back to win the next two sets, 7-6 and 6-2.

Swank, Gauto Mariotti and the doubles team of Kaehr-Joseph all qualified for next weekend’s state tournament.

The Lawrence High boys also competed at regionals on Thursday, but only senior Ryan Abbott was able to pick up a victory in Round 1.

After winning his first match, Abbott lost to Gauto Mariotti in the second round and fell one win shy of qualifying for state.
