Plans for a gameday shuttle in the works

Plans for a gameday shuttle from downtown to Memorial Stadium are again in the works for Kansas University football game days.

Commissioners even are open to the idea of expanding the shuttle service to take people from different areas of town to the stadium. Areas discussed included South Iowa Street, the area near the Holidome in northern Lawrence, and an area along East 23rd Street.

But unlike last year, the city may charge a fare to ride the bus. Commissioners made no decision, but said they wanted to study the idea of charging a $1 or $2 fare to help cover the city’s costs to provide the service.

Last year, the Kansas Athletic Department helped cover unexpected costs to provide the service. But City Manager David Corliss said leaders with KU Athletics had told him that they were not prepared to provide funding for the service this year.
